Economic Planning Secretary and National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Director-General Arsenio M. Balisacan called on the government and private sector leaders to commit to the new United Nations (UN) agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), during its launching at the Hotel InterContinental, Makati City on August 3.

“Political will must be mustered. That’s easier said than done but we need to get our leaders more accountable to these development goals,” said Secretary Balisacan. He also recognized the challenges on operationalizing the new SDGs.

The new 17 SDGs are a set of universal goals and indicators that will be used by the 193 member states of the UN in framing their agendas and political policies for the next 15 years. The SDGs cover social, economic, and environmental issues clustered into six essential elements covering dignity, prosperity, justice, partnership, planet, and people.
